How It Works
Buying a dateless private registration from Northern Registrations is straightforward. Here's everything you need to know, from browsing to having the plate on your vehicle.
Browse & Choose Your Plate
Browse our collection of dateless registrations on the Registrations for Sale page. Every plate we list is genuinely available and ready to transfer. Dateless registrations — those without a year identifier — are among the most sought-after in the UK, as they can be assigned to a vehicle of any age without revealing it.

Get in Touch to Enquire
Once you've found a plate you like, use the enquiry button on the listing or contact us directly by phone or email. We'll confirm availability, answer any questions, and walk you through the purchase. There's no pressure — we're happy to take the time to make sure you're confident in your decision.

Agree the Sale & Pay
Once you're happy to proceed, we'll agree the sale price and arrange payment. We'll guide you through the paperwork required by the DVLA. You don't need to transfer the plate to a vehicle immediately — it can be held on a retention certificate, giving you flexibility on timing.
The plate can be retained for up to 10 years on a DVLA retention document.
DVLA Transfer
We handle the DVLA assignment process on your behalf. The transfer is completed online through the DVLA's official system. You'll need the V5C logbook for the vehicle you're assigning the plate to, and the vehicle must be registered, taxed, and have a valid MOT (if applicable).
Transfers typically complete within 2–5 working days once the DVLA processes the application.
Display Your Plate
Once the transfer is confirmed, you'll receive a new V5C showing your private registration. You can then have your plates made up by any DVLA-registered number plate supplier. The plates must comply with current DVLA display regulations — correct font, size, and spacing.
Keep your confirmation documents safe — you'll need them if you ever transfer the plate again.
